Mission Day was a huge success with wonderful support from our kids, families and community as well. It was exciting seeing the different stalls and activities. We raised $1200 for Holy Angels Orphanage in India.

Enjoy the photos!

Mission Day is coming...

Here in Room 7 we are getting excited for our annual Mission Day this Friday.

Our goal is to raise as much money from fundraising by selling cakes, baked goods, raffles, activities and games. As part of our Inquiry topic this term we are looking into how we help those who cannot help themselves.

Stay tuned over the next few days and see how it all turns out.

Cross Country at Bailey Rd School.

On the 16th August we sent a group of Y6 to Y8 students to participate in the Tamaki Cluster Cross Country. The weather was great, spirits were his and everyone gave their best efforts. Although our kids didn't place in the top 3 of each grade, we still had a great time. Many thanks to Eric from Bailey Road School for his great organisation!

Poets Of Room 7

Our theme for writing this term is "to entertain" so we have been learning various types of poetry: Haiku, Cinquain and Reverse Poetry.

Idaliah has enjoyed writing Haiku in particular. These poems have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the final line. She says "You can actually express yourself in a different way. Here is an example of a piece she is working on.

Alizzandro has been refining an example of Reverse Poetry - this is where we use phrases that are opposite very carefully to make a poem which tells one story from top to bottom, then the opposite story when you read from the bottom to the top. Alizzandro commentted "I like this type of poem because it makes the reader feel surprised once they read it upwards". You can read it here.

Exploring Maths Through Running?

Room 7 have been using our Maths warm up time this term to look into Statistical Literacy and consolidate our measurement learning from Term 1.

We have been participating in a daily (as the weather has permitted) Progressive Fitness Test and graphed the results to chart our progress. Heneliena told us that her progress has been "up and down" but she is able to work out that her average distance covered was 306m.

All in the right question.

L.I.: use maths questioning to solve a problem.

"Hundreds, Tens and Ones".
Room 7 have enjoyed playing "Guess My Number" as a Maths warmup last term. This term they are using focused questions and devlop logic skills by taking this game to another level. Working in groups, the audience take turns to answer questions which are designed to identify the digits of a mystery three digit number. Here is an example of how the class used their questions for the number "809":

"Is the hundreds digit greater than 5?"    "YES."
"Is the hundreds digit less than 3?"          "NO."
"Is the hundreds digit equal to 4?             "NO."
"Is the whole number odd?"                     "YES"

Here is an example of how the class worked out the next number "423".

Volvo Have A Go! Sailing In Okahu Bay

On the 11th of May our Year 7's and 8's had the opportunity to participate in a day of learning to sail at Okahu Bay.
For many this was an opportunity to try something completely new and, as you can tell by the photos, a great time was had by all.

As the day progressed, the clouds rolled in and the wind picked up. This didn't, however put a damper on their spirits!

We humbly thank our tutors and acknowledge Rotary Meadowbank for making this whole event possible.

Volleyball Tournament Day.

Tamaki Cluster Volleyball Tournament.

On April the 10th we went to Selwyn college  for a volleyball tournament.

First we got separated into two cars Mr Makalio and Mr Afamasaga.
I went with Mr. Makalio, along with four other students and his daughter.
3 other students rode with Mr. Afamasaga.

We couldn't have a year 8 and 6 team because we didn’t have enough students
participating in the tournament so we entered one year 7 team. We had 5 students
that came from our class Room 7 and 3 from Room 8.

In our first game we played against Glen Innes School and it didn’t go so well
however we were just getting warmed up. Other schools we played against included
Tamaki Primary, Stonefields and Te Kura Kaupapa o Puao. We made some mistakes
like doing our sets wrong and missing the ball under pressure.

In the second to last game we beat Stonefield School We won by 21 to 20 which grew
our confidence a little bit, but the most important thing was that we all gave our best
and had a great time.

We would like to give thanks to both Mr Makalio and Mr Afamasaga for
helping us with getting to and from the tournament.
