Do you know that compost takes a lot of effort? By Kevin

On Monday the 23rd, my class and I made compost. Our teacher split us into four groups.

Two of the groups went outside looking for leaves and twigs while the other two groups had to cut banana peels and rip up old newspaper. The leaves and twigs are the greens for the compost and the paper and the banana peels are the browns for the compost. I was in the group that had to cut banana peels and we used scissors to cut them into very small pieces.

We took a long time because there were a lot of banana peels. The groups that had to collect twigs and leaves came back while we were still cutting. They had completed their part before us. The newspaper group soon finished ripping up the pieces of clean newspaper.

Image result for compostWe used a garden fork and a small trowel to flip and move everything that we had added. We all had a turn in twos but we only had ten seconds to mix and turn the compost.

Finally we were complete. We decided to put our compost in an area with low light. It was a lot of fun and we washed our hands and scissors so that we would not attract ants into our class.

Learning intention: We are learning how to write a recount.
Success criteria: I know I can do this when I follow the structure of a recount to write about my class making compost.

The water was so cold in the pool! By Justice

In the last school holidays,  my family and I went on the most amazing trip to Hamilton. We had never been to Hamilton before. We went down for my favourite cousin’s birthday. We went for more than three weeks because we had not had a family trip together for a long time. I was so excited that I packed my clothes very quickly so that we could quickly leave to get there before my sister and her husband.

When we arrived at the motel, we all placed our heavy bags in the rooms and my sisters and I asked my dad and mum if we could have a swim in the swimming pool. They answered “Yes.” So we went and swam until my sister and her husband arrived. After they arrived, we got changed and had a shower because it was getting late so it was time for us to go to bed. We had our own rooms. One room for my parents, one room for my sister and her husband, one room for the rest of my sisters and the other room was for me, my cousin and Anna.

The next morning we went to the kitchen and made ourselves some breakfast. For breakfast, we had nutrigrain cereal and wholemeal bread. While we were having breakfast, my older sister was chatted to us about what our plans were for the day. Then my brother-in-law suggested that  we should go to the Indoor Trampoline Park. So we went and got ready quickly and hopped into the car. My dad drove us quickly to the Trampoline Park.

When we got there, the lady at the counter said to us, ‘’Those people who are playing, needs to wear socks.” It was only my sister Anna, my two cousins and I that needed to wear socks because we were under fourteen. We jumped up and down trying to catch a ball. It was really hard for me because the others were able to jump really high and move quickly. I tried and tried and I got the ball after twenty jumps. We played and played until the clock hit six pm.

We were all so tired after all the jumping. We decided to buy some some sandwiches for dinner. My dad drove the car straight back to the motel and I fell asleep on the way.

When we got to the Motel, we had a quick shower and went to bed because we were all so tired. I fell asleep very quickly after my shower. That was the best day ever because I had so much fun!

Learning intention: We are learning to write a recount.

Wow, trying to get dodge Lupe is very hard! By Punipuao

On Friday 20th of May, Room 7 went to the top court to have our 3rd Netball session with our coach Tina. First we warmed up by jogging to the base line and back a couple of times.

Next Tina taught us how to do the crab move when we are defending our opponents in Netball. We had to move backwards and jog left and right. Next we were told to line up into two lines in pairs. I chose Lupe because we were of the same height.

Lupe was the defender, but I was the dodger. Lupe had to be in front of me with her left shoulder in front of my chest. I had to try and get past Lupe to get to Tina. I ran left and right trying to get away from Lupe, she couldn't catch me so I was able to reach the finish line. For our last activity, Tina taught us a skill from her Netball club. We had to jump to each side three times and back to the front. It was very challenging.

My favourite part was when Lupe tried her best to defend me from getting to Tina because she used a lot of energy to trying to
defend me.

Learning intention: We are learning to write a recount.
Success criteria: I know i can do this when I follow the structure of a recount starting with an introduction, followed by the events and then the conclusion of my class' playing Netball.

Do you have a class compost? By Lupe

Today Room 7 made our compost for our garden. Miss Chao brought some fresh cut grass from home in a container. Miss Chao divided us into four groups. One of the groups had to cut up some newspapers, the second group had to cut up the food scraps and the other two had to go outside and collect some brown leaves in a bag.

My group’s job was to cut up the food scraps. It was very hard to cut the banana skin so we used some scissors. We cut some small pieces of banana skin into the container. The browns group soon came back with a bag full of brown leaves and twigs. Two students from that group came to help us cut up some banana skins because there were a lot of banana skins.
Then the browns group went to chop up the twigs that they picked up while Miss Chao talked to the rest of the class about the process of decomposition. When we had combined all the materials together, it was time to mix them. We all had a turn. When it was my turn to mix, I could smell the fresh grass in the container. It was very hard to toss/mix the bottom layer because there were a lot of leaves.

My favourite part was when we all tossed the mixture to help it to decompose more quickly.
I am so excited about having a class COMPOST!

I learnt how to chest pass! By Mary

On Friday the 6th of May my class and I had our second Netball session. When we arrived in the top court, we were asked to introduce our name, age and what we wanted to be when we grow up. When it was my turn, I said, “My name is Mary, I am 9 years old and I want to be a nurse”. Our coaches were Tina and Mark.

First we started some warm ups and we jogged to the end of the court and back three times. Then we stood on one leg and stretched our arms out.

Then we learnt the chest pass and balancing when we have caught the ball. We had to get a partner and my partner was Alessandra. We did ten chest passes to each other. Sometimes we stopped because we weren't doing it correctly. I was not a good catcher, but I tried my best.

Then we went into three groups and we had to pass the ball to the left or the right and run to join the group that is in the opposite direction. We continued the activity for a little while. Then we went in a circle and we warmed down by doing some more stretches. It’s important for you to warm up and warm down when you play a sport, because this can help you to prevent injuries.

At the end of our session, Tina asked us what our class name was, but we hadn't discuss it before the session so one of my classmates just called out a random name. After that, we said, “Thank you!” to Tina and Mark and headed back to class.

Do you know where I went in the school holidays? By Mary

On Saturday my family and I went to the beach for a picnic. It took us only 9 minutes to get there. First we went to the market to get some food. I felt excited and happy.

When we arrived there we put our swimming togs. My togs was colourful and had heart shapes and poky dots. I really liked it. When my cousin and I were ready we went for a swim in the water. It felt warm because the sun was up. I had a great swim.

After that we went to get changed so that we can play some games. When I came out I saw my mum, dad and auntie playing volley. I wanted to play but the mum said, “No because if you play you are going to get hurt”. So I said, “OK!” So I went to go play hide and seek. First my cousin was in. Then he tagged me. So I ran to go get my little brother.

Later on we decided to eat. There was a lot of tasty food and drinks. When I got my food it was yummy and delicious.

Finally we went home because we were all tired. My favourite part was we had so much fun in the water.

My mum has finally got another girl! By Soane

On Sunday the 17th of April, I was very excited because it was time for the baby that my mum was having to be born.

She knew it was coming because her stomach got heavier and heavier. We took my mum to the hospital when we knew she was about to give birth.

I told my brothers and sister that we should go to the family room to give my mum some space. We went inside the family room and watched TV while we waited. After waiting for one hour and twenty four minutes my sister came to us and said "It's a girl!" So we rushed back into my mum's room and saw the baby wrapped in a white blanket.

I asked Launoa if she was going to name her and she said "Yes!" Launoa named the baby Maria.

I was very happy for Launoa because she finally has a sister to play with.

Yes, I won my first two medals! By Alessandra

Image result for karate medalsOn the 9th of April my grandparents, family and I went to Manurewa netball centre for my karate tournament.

First my family and I hopped happily into my dad’s big, grey car. Then we went pick up my grandparents from their house so we could all go to the tournament together. After we picked them up, we headed to the netball centre in Manurewa. It only took us 15 minutes to get there, because there was no traffic.

When we got there, there  were three rings that were ready for us to do our kata and kumite in. I looked for some seats for my grandparents and my family while my dad was booking us in.

After that, it was time for the tournament to start. First we had to stand in our lines. Then the highest belt had to bow us in. After we had bowed the the highest belt, he told us that we were put into three rings and that we will be in different time. My first round was in ring two and it started at 10:30.

When it was 10:30, I went into ring two. There were competitors from all over Auckland and even Christchurch. When I was doing my kata, I felt nervous but I gave it my all. When my competition ended, the judges gave out medals for both kata and kumite. I received a silver in kata and bronze for kumite. After that we all went home.

I had an awesome day because I won my first two medals. I hope that I could get gold in both kata and kumite next time.

Learning intention: We are learning to understand and use the correct language features in our recount.
Success criteria: I know I can do this when I write about my karate tournament using past tense.
